Our story and philosophy
Teach Me was founded by artists John and Yolanda Houston following their move from Southeast London to the Romney Marsh. With a shared passion for art, craftsmanship and teaching, they created Teach Me to pass on skills, encourage creativity and help people discover what they are capable of making.
Yolanda’s background in glasswork and mosaics has led to public and community-based commissions, while John’s artwork has been exhibited in established galleries. Together, their experience shapes the welcoming, encouraging ethos that runs through everything Teach Me does.
Recognising and nurturing talent is a key part of this philosophy. Many students go on to share their own skills, sometimes contributing to larger projects alongside the team. This reflects a belief that creativity grows best when knowledge, experience and opportunities are shared.
Creative projects beyond the studio
Alongside workshops and courses, Teach Me is involved in creative projects beyond its own studios. These projects often bring people together through shared making, collaboration and craftsmanship, and many are rooted in community spaces.
From public artworks to school and community-based initiatives, these collaborations reflect the same values found in the studio — creativity, care and working together. Projects often involve participants of different ages and backgrounds, creating work that has meaning both during the process and long after it is completed.
Each project is shaped by the people involved, with an emphasis on skill-sharing, inclusion and creating something lasting. Many draw on the combined experience of the Teach Me team and its wider creative community.
Seeing creativity in action
Creativity at Teach Me takes many forms, shaped by the people who take part and the ideas they explore. The work created in the studio reflects a wide range of skills, materials and approaches, from first-time makers to more experienced creatives.
The gallery offers a glimpse into this shared creative process, showcasing finished pieces and works in progress that have emerged from workshops, courses and collaborative projects. It captures not just what is made, but the variety of ways people learn, experiment and express themselves.
Each piece tells its own story, while together they reflect the supportive and inclusive environment that defines Teach Me.
